Israel FA rejects ‘cynical’ Palestinian call for FIFA suspension

Israel’s football association (IFA) on Friday called Palestinian demands that it be suspended from FIFA a “cynical attempt” to “harm Israeli football”.

“The proposal submitted by the PFA has nothing to do with the IFA and its activity,” IFA chief Shino Moshe Zuares told a FIFA meeting in Bangkok.

FIFA will take independent legal advice on the Palestinian FA’s call to suspend its Israeli counterpart over events in Gaza, the world body’s president said Friday.

Gianni Infantino said FIFA would hold an extraordinary session of its ruling council before July 20 to review the legal analysis and decide how to proceed.

Israel to respond to genocide charges at UN court

Israel will respond to charges of genocide at the United Nations’ top court on Friday, after South Africa filed an urgent request with the court to order a ceasefire in Gaza.

It’s the third time that the International Court of Justice, or ICJ, has held hearings on the Israel-Hamas war since South Africa filed proceedings at The Hague-based court in December.

On Thursday, South Africa told the court that the situation in Gaza has reached “a new and horrific stage”, and urged the 15 judges to take urgent action. Israel must “totally and unconditionally withdraw” from the Gaza Strip, said Vusimuzi Madonsela, South Africa’s ambassador to the Netherlands.

South Africa has submitted four requests for the ICJ to investigate Israel. According to the latest request, the country says Israel’s military incursion in Rafah threatens the “very survival of Palestinians in Gaza”.

During hearings earlier this year, Israel strongly denied committing genocide in Gaza, saying it does all it can to spare civilians and is only targeting Hamas militants. Israel says Rafah is the last stronghold of the militant group.

In January, judges ordered Israel to do all it can to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza, but the panel stopped short of ordering an end to the military offensive.

Thai PM ‘deeply saddened’ by deaths of two Thai citizens in October 7 attack

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said Friday he was “deeply saddened” by the deaths of two Thais who were killed in the October 7 attack on Israel and whose bodies were being held by Hamas.

The Israeli army said late Thursday that it had informed the families of the deaths of the two men, who were identified as “kidnapped Thai citizens” and earlier believed to be alive in the Gaza Strip.

There are now six Thai hostages being held in Gaza, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that the two Thai hostages in Gaza, namely Mr. Sonthaya Oakkharasri and Mr. Sudthisak Rinthalak are now confirmed deceased,” Srettha said on social media platform X. “I offer my deepest condolences to both their families,” he added. “The Thai Government will continue to do our utmost to secure the release of the remaining hostages.”

US House votes to require delivery of bombs to Israel in Republican-led rebuke of Biden policies

The US House delivered a rebuke to President Joe Biden Thursday for pausing a shipment of bombs to Israel, passing legislation that seeks to force the weapons transfer as Republicans worked to highlight Democratic divisions over the Israel-Hamas war.

Seeking to discourage Israel from its offensive on the crowded southern Gaza city of Rafah , the Biden administration this month put on hold a weapons shipment of 3,500 bombs – some as large as 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds) – that are capable of killing hundreds in populated areas. Republicans were outraged, accusing Biden of abandoning the closest US ally in the Middle East.

The White House has said Biden would veto the bill if it passes Congress, and the Democratic-led Senate seems certain to reject it.
