ノーベル賞は5日午後6時45分、化学賞が発表される。今年は生命現象を化学の観点から研究する「生化学」の分野が有力視されているが、「ビッグサプライズ」があるのも化学賞の醍醐（だいご）味だ。注目の研究や分野を紹介する。
1981年に受賞した福井謙一氏以来、日本の化学賞の受賞者は計8人。
その中には、メディアがまったく予想しなかった研究者がいた。
電気を通すプラスチックを発明した白川英樹氏が2000年に化学賞を受けた。87年に医学生理学賞を受けた利根川進氏以来、自然科学系では13年ぶりとなる久しぶりのノーベル賞の知らせだった。
